Hello, I got a Saturn SL2 96 sedan. Here's my problem: Once in a while, my car will squeal really badly somewhere under the hood. It usually happens when it's cold outside and I hit the acceleration right away without some warming up. I also think that this happens more when it's moist or had been raining not too long ago. The squeeling usually goes away after I drive a little (about 3-6 blocks). When I accelerate, the squeeling gets louder (but it plateaus). Last night, it was a good 50 degrees out but the squeeling came back again. What was different was that the squealing came back after it went away. It has never done this. It came back after I hit the brakes for a light and then went away after a block of driving. The squeeling came back again after I exited the highway and had to hit the brakes again. Today, I turned on the ac for the first time in the year and I noticed that the squealing comes back when the ac is on and I've stop with the car in drive. What is going on?

Isn't it cool a site has a spot for "funny noises?" My guess is the belt or tensioner is not working well. Check the feel of the tension on the belt. Under load the alternator and compressor may not have what they need from the belt. If it hasn't had a new one in a while it sure wouldn't hurt to replace it. You can proove this by spraying some silicone spray on the inside of the belt and if that alone shuts it up you NEED a new belt but get the one by Gates called Gatorback. The package will say "the quiet belt." They might be available here but definately are at AutoZones. If you find the tensioner bad replace both that and the belt. Hope that helped, T
