I have a 2005 Chevy equinox, AWD, 6 cyl with 100K miles. I have had a nagging sound from the front end since I bought the vehicle. Over the last 3 years it has become progressively worse. When I bought the car the steering had a strange coil like sound when turning, I took it to the dealer and they wanted 1000 to fix t but were very vague as to the problem. I decided against it. I have since been to 4 other places trying to get an answer and noone has found the problem. It is winter now and when it snows the car feels as if the front shocks or springs are loose or giving too much over bumps. I have had all brakes replaced and a bushing in the center of the drive shaft that was causing knockig (thought it would solve the issue). My tires are all wearing fine, so no help here. Are there springs other than the Coils around the shocks that could be giving me this trouble?

>>nagging sound from the front end<< Sounds like my mother in law. Over the last 37 years she has become progressively worse, too. Unsure
Does the Equinox have standard shock absorbers in the front? (as opposed to struts) Were the other shops that looked at it able to hear the noise? If they are struts, could be a mount bearing where the top of the strut swivels. If conventional type shocks, don't see how they'd come into play during turns. The newer vehicles have 'sealed' tie rods and ball joints. Could be one of them 'creaking' during turns.

Lookie what I found looking for whoosey thingies for this vehicle!

Strut Bumper Bellows - Front Susp
Google outdid itself! Napa "on-line" showed this as a part to protect shock/strut and assist with bottoming out as an OE replacement part! Looks by design that it could be part to cause noise if somehow it was loose, cracked (like me!) or broken somehow. If nothing appeared wrong with the orig I'd try spraying it with some silicone and if it shut up then go for replacing it. It might make some noise by just jockeying it around in place now??

Easy on the MIL Loren - you could find yourself missing a piece of 'glutimus maximus' Pirate

Hey thanks for the info. I know enough to not get ripped off at the mechanic, but that's about it. Everything you say sounds perfectly logical. When I went to the dealer they said this vehicle has a list of issues, but most were not warrantied. Any idea how I can get a hold of that list?

Chambie; If you have a shop that you frequent for normal maintenance/repairs, they should be able to bring up that info for you. They are called TSB's. (Technical Service Bulletins). Not sure, but I think you can get that on line, also(All Data); Maybe one of the guys in the forum will jump in and let you know. Also, I would think, that you could call the manufacturer (should be a toll free number in your owner's manual) and request same. Might even be able to do that online, as well. Good luck.
