Re: odd noise from 03 explorer Sign In

Hi, Obviously the section is called Funny Noises for a reason. Perhaps this is a belt or pulley bearing whine. I'm forever ruling these out as some can be very strange. Try spraying some WD-40 on the belt's friction surface and see it the noise about instantly goes away. If so I'll blame the belt and if it looks real good and is tight enough most will behave long term with use of silicone grease on the belt.

If not change - see if you can hear any busyness at the belts and pulleys. Hard to tell which one sometimes. If this seems like the possible direction you can listen to bearing with a mechanic's stethescope or listening rod. Those are real attractive when shot thru your head so use all caution.

Another that can be elusive is the exhaust sytem. There are lighter metal heat shields tack welded around converters and spots on some pipes that can make some strange noises. Some you can find by just tapping on the exhaust with a rubber hammer when engine is off or just bump around and look at general condition of those. That sort of thing would be RPM and load related but so can belts and pulleys. Keep at it,

T
