noise from rocker cover on mondeo Sign In

I HAVE A 03 MONDEO 1800 ZETEC PETROL I ONLY HAVE HAD THE CAR FOR 3 MONTHS AS IT WAS LAID UP AND NOT USED FOR 12 MONTHS. THE IS A TAPPING NOISE COMING FROM INSIDE THE ROCKER COVER. AT FIRST I THOUGHT IT WAS A BIGEND RATTLE BUT WHEN I HAD A GOOD LOOK FOUND IT WAS TOP END.I HAVE TAKEN THE ROCKER COVER OFF TO CHECK THE CAMSHAFTS ARE OK THE BUCKET TAPPETS ARE OK.CHECKED THE GAPS ON THE INLET AND EXHAUST AND THEY ARE OK.THOUGHT IT MITE BE THE SWIRLS IN THE INLET MANIFOLD SO HAD A LOOK THEY ARE ALL OK NONE HAVE BROKE OFF.
SO AT THE MOMENT I AM PULLING MY HAIR OUT TRYING TO SORT IT OUT.WHEN I TOOK THE ROCKER COVER OFF THE WAS A BIT OF THICK GUNK IN IT.DO YOU THINK WITH IT STANDIG FOR 12 MONTHS AN OIL WAY TO ONE OF THE TAPPETS IS BLOCKED AND THE IS NOT ENOUGH OIL GETTIG TO ONE OF TAPPETS I HAVE CHANGED THE OIL TWICE AND FILTER. THE CAR HAS ONLY DONE 48,000 MILES I WAS GOING TO GIVE IT A GOOD ENGINE FLUSH AND PUT MORE OIL IN.ANYONE GOT ANY IDEAS PLEASE.THANKS EDDIE

12 months improperly stored is a long time. low miles you might correct this with frequent oil changes - no additives or tricky magic in a bottle as new oil has what it needs. You said you saw blade, the engine's enemy but oil changes more frequently can clear some of that up.

Good luck,

i took the car to the ford main dealer to have a quick look at the engine.never took it into the work shop just came out to have a listern.and he said he thinks it is a piston i was a bit surprised as it drives
superb compression is 140 on all cylinders.driving me up the wall.

Re: noise from rocker cover on mondeo Sign In

Shoot! All cylinders having even compression if checked right is a great sign. The long rest probably caused something to stick vs broken mechanical something unless seen.

When was oil changed? Seems sticky and plain changing it as said can fix it.

Story: Bought an awesome car once all sticky w noisy engine so nice was willing to repair it. Several oil changes fixed it and went on to God knows how many more miles to friends with overdoing oil changing,

It may have a mechanical problem but you've had mixed opinions so far. Noises are tough over the web so use judgement.

Re: noise from rocker cover on mondeo Sign In

Suggest crank engine and disable start for the first try. Man - some of these can spray oil not like older American Iron engines with a valve cover off.

Have helper at the ready,

Re: noise from rocker cover on mondeo Sign In

i took the rocker cover off and run engine to see that oil was getting to the top of engine.i had a bright idea to stop oil spraying every were i put some old rags around engine.i asked my son to start the engine and guess what happend one of the rags moved and got trapped under the inlet cam.so i bent 4 valves had to take the head off lap 16 valves in new valve stem oil seals head gasket and all the work that goes with it.so when it was all in bits checked every thing which and guess what every thing was ok so it has to be the bottom half.the only thing is trying to get the parts as you can not get shells anywear.another problem

Re: noise from rocker cover on mondeo Sign In

Sorry to hear that rags cause such a show! If problem is exactly the same still AND you noted some sludge in there then I'd probably just keep changing oil unless it doesn't improve soon then get help to isolate the noise before it does any more harm,
