Please be gentle. I'm a virgin. I got a 1986 VW Golf two door. It's been -10 celsius for a few days. When I tried to start it, nothing happened. I have juice in the battery, but when I turn it over, nothing. It then makes a whirling sound for a couple of seconds after I turn the key back. I'm clueless. Help a guy out will you? Help me vet my girlfriend off my back.

First, remove the battery and have it tested. Make sure your battery connections are clean and tight. Then we'll go from there.

Thanks for responding. I just pulled the battery. The terminals are clean and tight. It's got a good charge. All the right lights come on when I turn it over, but nothing happens after that. My guess is that it's the starter or distributor or it's just too cold out. What are your thhoughts? Why go get the battery checked?

Usually the first step in diagnosing a no crank is to make sure that the battery is good. Measuring the battery voltage with no load is not a good way of making sure the battery is good. If you measure the voltage at the battery while attempting to crank the engine and the voltage stays above 10 volts, then you should make some electrical checks at the starter itself. If the starter has everything it needs electrically is when you probably have a faulty starter.

Another thing to consider is if this has an immobilizer system that disables the starter. Make sure your factory immobilizer system or after market alarm system isn't active.

Ok, I'll check it out tomorrow. Mechanics in Norway (where I'm writing from) cost a fortune, so I'll be solving this myself. Would you suggest me buying a battery charger and let it charge overnight before I get into it?

That is your choice. If you don't know what the battery voltage is or its condition, why charge it? If you do end up charging it, be careful. You don't want to charge or jump a frozen battery.

My girlfriend (her car) batted her eyes and swung her bumper to get a good deal with a mechanic, so we'll go that route, but I'll post the outcome to both finish out this thread and to help others if it can.
Cheers
