front "thumping" from a 2001 Saab 9-3 Sign In

Hello,

I have a 2001 Saab 9-3 convertible.

The front end of the car is making a thumping noise that is speed and steering dependent. I thought I had a badly bent rim to give you an idea of the type of noise. Loudest from about 25 - 45 mph. Not nearly as noticeable above 65 mph. Less noisy when steering left, a little less noisy when steering right. Loudest when going straight ahead.

The mechanics have replaced both axle/CVs with no luck and they swear the wheel bearings are fine. When they have it on the rack, the differential (? the drivetrain box that the axle connects into) makes a grinding noise when they turn the wheels. No metal in the tranny fluid. The mechanic says we need to get a new tranny.

Does that sound right? The noise made by the differential seems a lot different than what I hear when the wheels are loaded and I am inside the car. Also, if the problem is in the drivetrain, is there something other than replace the entire tranny?

Thank in advance!

They can't conclusively know the bearings are good when listening to them unloaded.
