ford explorer making a clunking sound Sign In

I have a 1998 Ford Explorer and when I make a left turn I hear a clunking sound coming from what seems like the right front tire area.

If that is the problem is that an expensive repair?

Not high on the list. What those are, are long bolts with rubber, washers, sleeve that equalize the lean of the vehicle on turns. In pothole season they are common and break and make noise on the broken one. It would be a bar that mounts and pivots on the frame of the car and attaches with those pins at the lower control arm.

Can be tricky mostly to remove broken or rusted ones. Many are cheap like less than 20 bucks and some are near a 100 bucks for a pair.

It may not be that but it came to mind as a friend about 130 miles away has a broken one and wondered if it could wait till after the holidays and I said no for him as it could swing around and damage something other than itself. They can be silent while broken and generally make noise based on the shift of weight from side to side on the vehicle and try to keep it level/stabil. You shift weight by turning - in your case left which pulls up on that pin and pushes down on the right pin which would make the noise on the broken one being pushed down.

They also can make noise when one wheel hits a bump and the other does not. These things can be used front and rear or not at all in assorted vehicles and where first popular in cars ordering a handling package or sport option.

If you drive like an old lady like me you wouldn't even notice them if missing.

Take a look for about a six inch pin/bolt isolated by rubber and have someone just bounce one side and you'll see a broken one demonstrate itself - wheels on the ground and don't crush yourself with someone bouncing on the vehicle!
You can see them on an Exporer without getting under it,
