dodge dakota squeaking in front left wheel Sign In

I just replaced the wheel bearings in the front driver side wheel of my 88 dodge dakota v6 rear wheel drive. I hear a squeaking sound that i can hear every revolution of the wheel it seems the sound gets louder when I brake. the brakes aren't rubbing I know that the truck sat for a long time I was wondering if this could be a joint or something and how easy it swould be to fix if i had to.

Try rotating the tires. You can get an irregular wear patter in the tires that will sound just like a wheel bearing. Applying the brakes puts more weight on it which increases the sound.

Gotta ask - did this noise start instantly with replacing the bearings? If so go back and look at the new ones. Some have a high failure rate right out of the box.

Also - if cotter pin is rubbing the dust cap that would make a noise -- a maybe?

rotated the tires and checked the dust cap. and the sound didn't start after the wheel bearing was replaced I replaced the wheel bearing and it was still there. the part that is puzzling me is when i break the noise is louder yet the brakes are in great shape and nothing is rubbing, etc.

just don't want to take it to a mechanic so they can tell me you had a speck of dirt on whatever.

This begs the question - did it ever need a wheel bearing to begin with and can you tell the difference between a good and bad one?

Even replacing a greasable wheel bearings take some know how. This is primal and YOU need to answer questions. Just saying you are 100% sure proves you don't know JACK.

Want to fix this? Or not?

Re: dodge dakota squeaking in front left wheel Sign In

jack happens to be my brother. thank you. I don't know what questions I haven't answered. you told me to rotate the tires i did and yes I can tell the difference between a good wheel bearing and a bad one I figured with the mileage on the car it was about time to change them anyways and i did.
I just noticed that the sound doesn't happen in reverse, so maybe that helps I am not sure.
to answer all your questions and I am not sure if this one was rhetorical or not but yes i want to fix the problem.
cotter pin shows no signs of rubbing.
however changing the wheel bearings has made for a much better ride so I think their time was coming anyway, either that or they just needed to be repacked.
and I said "nearly" %100 percent because I realize that I could have made a mistake. no need to shout I am simply needing help and if I am causing you problems I can repost and hope someone else will help me.

PEACE friend. I mean no harm - period! I'm not here to "tick you off" in any way.

The question is already answered. YOU don't know a good or bad wheel bearing do you? Hmmm - nor does "Jack."

Perhaps it's time time to seek out some help. I'm done with the biz. Can we make bucks at this - YES. Is it worth it - YES! Just BTW - all here are UNPAID volunteers!
