clunking noise when turning - car moving only

I have a 1987 Jeep Cherokee with a 4.0 V6 with a 116k miles on it. I am getting a clunking type noise when I turn the wheel. It seems to happen when turning right. No noise is heard when car is sitting still and I turn the wheel in both directions. If I drive the car I can turn the wheel left and right quickly and I get the clouking noise in both dirctions. The noise sounds like it it coming from the drivers wheel. Not sure if it is a ball joint or a CV joint. If it is a ball joint what is the procedure to determine which one is bad (can you tell by grabbing shaft and trying to feel play?). I greased all the ball joints and I thought that fixed it but it did not last long (21 day) and now noise is back. Any suggetions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Daboone

To check joints hoist vehicle by under lower control arm on most - some will be by body to reveal ball joint wear - try both and all way - get a helper to watch and pry up with wheel just off ground. That fact unless a cooincidence that greasing it made it go away isn't really good. A good steering joint doens't have any play so it that covered it up it may be very worn. I don't generally hear ball joint wear on cars as the weight is on them as to shut them up. Really gotta check it all out - brakes, sway bar, shocks, anything you can find that turns. CV joint usually crackle some at first when given power on turns but never say never with that either, T
