clicking at front wheel but not under braking Sign In

Toyota corolla 2004 1.4

I have a clicking noise from the front offside wheel. It occurs when driving straight and when cornering but disappears completely for a few seconds when braking, even with just a light touch on the brake. Also, the clicking does not start until I have been driving for a few miles so I wondered if it is related to something heating up?

I have just replaced the brake pads and wheel bearings which have been making a noise for a few weeks so I don't know if the clicking was previously masked by the bearings noise or it is a result of something I did when I fitted new bearings or brakes at same time.

I took it to my mechanic who pulled brakes apart, cleaned them and put them back but it still clicks. He thinks may be cv joint but didn't have time to do more than give them a visual check and he said couldn't see any problem. He's going to have a proper look next week but I'm wondering if I should stop driving it if cv joint is knackered.

Reading other posts on here I'm thinking cv joint too but would braking stop the noise and why would the clicking not start immediately instead of after a few miles?

Any thoughts appreciated.

To be surmise:

1. No click for a few miles from start unless get up to a quick speed soon.
2. Clicking speed increases/decreases with speed
3. Clicks on straight and right turning but quieter when turning left. Loudest when making gentle right turn.
4. Clicking stops when braking but resumes when brake is released. When moving faster (+50mph) it resumes immediately but at slower speeds it may not resume for a few seconds.

Re: clicking at front wheel but not under braking Sign In

I believe what you have are the results of doing a brake job incorrectly. It sounds like you just slapped a new set of pads with the old rotors and did nothing else. There is a whole lot more to doing a brake job correctly. It sounds like the pads are rattling in the holders triggered by spots in the rotor that is snagging on them.

The pads have to be prepped correctly, hardware needs to be checked or replaced, lube must be applied in the correct places and the rotors have to be either replaced or resurfaced.

Thanks for your reply. I thought brakes too but after they were cleaned and put back I started thinking it was drive shaft or something like that. I'll get my mechanic to do them again. Just wanted some reassurance the wheel wasn't likely to fall off really.

We can't assure you of anything. The car needs to be inspected by a competent mechanic.

Hey - just one note on this: If you think this is possible for as easy as loose lug nuts and can be if messed with check them right away. It does happen - no one way of noise or feel - rule that out at once if any chance at all, Tom

Have checked nuts and swapped wheels over just to rule that out too. Unfortunately I can't get it looked at properly for a few days and I'm not going to mess with the brakes myself.

I suppose what I really wanted to ask was if a problem with drive shaft or joints would likely make a noise that touching the brake would stop? Would a failing joint continue to click under light braking?

Re: clicking at front wheel but not under braking Sign In

Hammer Time has already pointed out the likely problem you or a pro tech should be checking out. Brake activated or squelched noises when you were just there is the likely problem from NOT doing something properly.

Rotors - if not "turned" or replaced the new pads don't have the same surfaces to each other - any thing uneven about trueness even rust and a new place pads sit in calipers all matters. Anti-rattle parts matter and noise is quiet when brakes are applied if pads are loose in place when not.

Forces shift when brakes are applied so can move away from the problem spot. It will be about everything you did if it began right then.

Include any heat shields that might be touching now being bent from working on it too or how hoisted.

Long list of checks. If you didn't replace or service rotors and didn't lube calipers and pads where required that has to be done now late as you do it while replacing pads or rotors then sometimes need to again for some if brakes last long enough for plain caliper lube to be gone and a problem,

T
