First, I have a 1996 Ford F150 XL (some would consider this my first mistake). I am not sure of the engine size, but I know it's an inline 6cylinder. 4x4, manual transmission, 135,000 miles. . . . . .

I've enjoyed the truck immensely, however today, while helping a friend move and backing into his steep driveway, I heard a very audible clunking noise which made me think I'd hit something, had something fallen off the truck?

The front tires appeared to be toed out, both of them, though this seems to have been caused by the weight in the back, and the steep grade (I was facing downhill). Looking at the front axles, etc, everything seemed to be in place. (I was not the only person looking, the other claiming to be more knowledgeable than myself)

I pulled back out of the drive after unloading to allow another truck to back in, and heard two more clunks. . . .

Half an hour later, I left, still hearing an occasional clunk. Then I braked. The truck jerked very hard to the left. I intended on turning around in a neighboring drive on the left, and turning into the drive, the car seemed to lunge to the left again. I parked.

Another Half hour later, I left again, and other than some minor clunking, I drove for 40 minutes with no issues, while braking or otherwise.

Now I leave the house again, and putting it in reverse the truck made alot of clunking again, and then lunged sharply to the left once again when I stopped.

I do not feel it is transmission related. . .shifts smoothly.
I only have limited knowledge, but the car steers too smoothly for me to believe tie-rod ends are broken. . . .as it doesn't seem to be drifting to left and right while driving, only the sharp lunge while braking.

I've never done my own brake work, yet, so I'm not positive what I'm looking at in that area, but I believe it can be the only location for a problem with these symptoms. My inexperience leads me to post this thread without pulling the tire off first so that I have some idea of what to look for/at. If it is a rotor, how do i tell? it's not going to be visible to the eye, is it? I can't imagine a wheel bearing causing this problem during braking. . . .

If more information is needed, or a new and improved description, I'll be happy to oblige! Also, the show-of-hands thing is not working, please leave a legible reply! :)

Thank you for any and all help in this department.

Sorry. I just had to do it.

Does the noise come from the front of the truck? Does it come from under the passenger or drivers seat? Location of the noise may help us a little more. I am assumiong it is from the front as you keep talking about pulling to the left. First thing to do is to jack up truck, safely support it, remove both front wheels and look at it closely. It could be caliper pins or slides that are causing the problem. Other than that, it is hard to kinow from the internet what the noise is. Look at all the front suspension, steering and brakes. Keep us informed.

Gees! Can't we have a show of PAWS?

Kitty says the first mistake is having a truck AND friends who need help movingCrazy

Same suggestions as Mr. way2old - check out the front end and I think you'll find a problem with the brake caliper, pads, pins but all to be inspected. Not so likely a rotor or bearing just yet with the description,

T

all seemed to be in order. . .i drove it to work (i had an appointment to have it checked out afterwards). . .same symptoms.

however, after parking, the rocker arm was found to be broken and hanging out.
more like ripped out, than actually broken.

at any rate, problem seems to have been located, now to the fixing. . .

no, gentlemen, i won't be trying this myself!!

more info. . . .the arm itself does not seem to have been broken. And the reason i did not notice before is when pulling forward, the arm goes back to where it's supposed to be.

The "tension bracket" (this is what the dealership dude called it) was broken. They will replace both sides, free of charge (got lucky on this one, took alot of bitching).

also, luckily for them, it is a bolt-on piece, no welding necessary!
