VW Touareg/Grinding sound from center of vehicle Sign In

I have a 2004 Volkswagen Touareg, automatic 4WD, V6/3.2 liter engine. It is currently at 49,200 miles. I got in my vehicle yesterday and as I hit approximately 22 mph it felt and sounded like I had a flat tire. I thought it was the driver side back tire. I pulled the vehicle over and all of the tires were fine with nothing protruding from them. I looked underneath the vehicle and did not see anything hanging down. I continued down the road and again at around 22 mph the vehicle was making a thumping noise. As I accelerated, the noise did as well. It than sounded more like something was grinding against something metal. The noise was synonymous with my speed, as I would speed up so did the noise. I had my arm resting on the center console and it appeared the problem was coming from underneath in the center of the vehicle. As I decelerated, the grinding continued however, this did not affect my brakes. The car braked smoothly and as I dropped below 22 mph the grinding stopped. When the car is in idle there are no noises as well. Later, I switched the auto differential into low to see if it would do the same thing and it did. I drove it again this morning and again at 22 mph the grinding starts. The only way I can describe the sound, is if something was rotating, like an axle, and everytime it came back around it would hit something. As the axle spins faster it is going to hit the object faster as it slows so does the sound. Whatever the problem is, as it grinds I can feel hear and feel it. Hope this is clear enough.
Thanx
