Toyota Corolla Serpentine Belt Problem Sign In

2001 Toyota Corolla S 4-cylinder 1.8 DOHC

The bolt that holds the tension pulley to the block broke, and the threads are still about an inch inside without the bolt being visible. I do not have a right-angle drill,(as the pulleys are on the left side of the engine and there are only 3-4 inches to work. Also you cannot access the bolt through the fender-well as it is above). I know that a r.a. drill and an easy-out would be the best solution, but unfortunately I don't have the drill. I was currently laid-off and can't afford the drill or the going rate of $60/hour and $60 tow to the local automotive repair shop.

My question is: Are there any other possibilities of something I could do myself without the above mentioned? ANY help is GREATLY appreciated, and of course as ALWAYS, GOD BLESS!!!!!

No, unfortunately, you have to access the area somehow. If the broken piece is not in there that tight, you might be able to thread it out with a pick or something but if it's tight, a drill and heli-coil is the only answer. You just have to do whatever is necessary to get sufficient up to and including removing the motor.

Try to support the engine and remove engine mounts and see if you can get the hole up far enough to drill.

I HAVE to advise that the hole needs to be PERFECTLY straight or you will be replacing your belt every oil change.

Your right about getting in there with a drill bit. Try using a left handed drill bit , otherwise known as a counterclockwise rotation. You can buy them in a "shorty". Also slight heat around bolt area, not the bolt will help removeal. 9 times out of 10 I've been able to remove stubborn broken bolts this was. Unfortunatly in you case, access is the issue...................can you reach thru the wheel well if you had a really long drill bit?
