Squirrels got into my 97 Achieva, chewed wires Sign In

1996 Oldsmobile Achieva
2.4L
90,000 miles

So I have an interesting problem. I did not drive my car for about a week and a squirrel got into the engine compartment and had a nest of babies. Unfortunately it chewed through some wires and things and now my car is running horribly.

I have little or no knowledge about cars but I plan on soldering the wires myself and using heat shrink tubing or some other cover to keep them unexposed. The black tube or wire I am sure I can just buy at an auto parts store but I don't know what it is called, can anybody identify it for me? It doesn't have wired running through it so I imagine its for air? I have it's connections circled in red.

If anyone could help it would be GREATLY appreciated. I feel this is a job I can do myself (for once) and would rather not get it towed to the shop for simple work.

Shot of the engine with the two connections of the identified cord/hose, you can see the part thats missing if you follow from the right connection:

Those aren't wires. They are vacuum lines. The top one is the fuel pressure regulator and the bottom one is a supply line.

The last picture is a wiring harness.

Thank you for identifying that for me!! Do you know how I would go about replacing the line? I can't seem to find a replacement part online.

Also, would I be able to solder the broken wires in the wiring harness myself as a temporary repair or should I just replace the whole thing all together?

The right way is to replace the whole harness. It could be repaired but I wouldn't suggest that to a novice. One mistake and you could take out the whole computer.

Not sure if you have a "you pull it" salvage yard in your area but you could always check there for the vacuum line and possibly the wiring harness. The vacuum line just pulls off and shouldn't cost much at all.

Dealer probably has the vacuum line. The harness can be repaired if the tree rats ate into the wiring, but it should be done by a professional. They had a good ole time in there...LOL. Changing that harness would be a nightmare.

Nice pics - bad squirellMad IDK, some other component damage may have already happened. I'd look for the "pull your own" junk yard but it would have to be exactly that engine and wires exactly the same colors. That outer split wiring cover is available or see it in bags now in parts stores - fairly generic stuff to hold wires together and out of harm's way.

Was a while ago we had quite a thread on preventing rodent damage and assorted methods so this isn't a routine.

* Moth balls - a maybe
* Change position of how car is parked! Some success!
* Rat poison - AYOR
* Unsure of those sonic noise things. It did really mess with someone's bird thoughUnsure

IDK nothing is perfect except sitting out with car with a shot gun perhaps,

T

This just might be your perfect answer to prevent future attack.

When Noah loaded the ark did he really have to bring squirrels and the mosquitos?

Me bad,
