Scraping sound-help!

About two weeks ago, I was driving my 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GT when I came around a corner and had to slam on the brakes due to a backup of cars. Immediately afterward, the car started making this weird scraping sound whenever I'd apply the brakes-at first, it wasn't so bad, but after a while it started getting worse, to the point where I could even hear it when my foot was on the gas pedal. Yesterday, it was really getting loud-at one point, I even felt as though the brakes had completely cut out on me, even though they returned a second later. What's the deal?

Got you all over this forum.
This brake issue could be a pad's lining has broken off of it's backing plate. When that happens it can take a few pumps to restore pedal pressure and then they are metal to metal from then on. Pad might have shifted, cracked - only a look will tell.
You shouln't drive it again like this and inspect it for just what did happen. Can't really guess without looking at it but the description is enough to quit driving this car!
