Parking Brake Issues - Rear Drum Brakes Sign In

Jeep Cherokee, 1996

When I engage the parking brake, it starts to engage as you would expect. At about the point where it can almost keep the car from rolling, I hear a clunk and the handle gets very, very easy to pull the rest of the way up. And it does not seem to do anything. At this point, I can move the handle up and down pretty freely without it doing anything (but you can hear the brakes moving if you get out and listen to them). After driving for a few minutes, it will be back to where I started, and repeat this cycle. Any idea where I should start? Thanks

Re: Parking Brake Issues - Rear Drum Brakes Sign In

The general layout for rear parking brake CABLES is one to the lever up front that usually lasts and splits to TWO - one for each back wheel. From underside you can tug on the cable by hand and see it pull out of each back wheel's brake and should nicely retract. If the cable is floppy after doing that find the frozen one.

Almost certain this is a cable issue and as stupid as they are they can be a real pill to replace and get them just right. Definately pull each rear wheel too and inpect that all hardware is properly in place.

Make sure back brakes are in good condition and properly adjusted as service brakes first or any adjustment to a replacement cable can and will cause complete hair loss later -m trust me!

I have checked, the cables do seem to be retracting normally and freely. I had both rear brakes completely done about 8k miles ago, so that should be fine.

Arrr! Gotta check and see where it's doing that. I suppose the ratcheting mechansim could also be the problem. Keep looking for where this might be loosing it's grab on engaging the brake. Just don't know what else to suggest except a full inspection front to rear,

Got it. The problem was that the clip that connects the parking brake cable to the drum, where it enters, had become detached from the parking brake housing. The housing was sticking on the outside of the hole, but then clunking when enough force caused it to slip. I picked up a new cable, and now its good as new.
