Noise when turning 2

I have a rubbing sound coming from near the left front tire of my 97 grand am. The repairman said it's the steering gear and given the age and mileage (150,000) I can go without fixing it and still be safe. I'd like a second opinion. It started when I was accelerating to pass another vehicle as two lanes merged into one. I heard two small thump sounds like a stone being thrown from a tire hitting the underside of the car but they were muffled. From that point on I heard the rubbing sound. It is louder the faster I go and only when I'm turning towards the left or going straight. It is not there when I'm stopped and turning the wheel to either side. I don't understand how it can be in the steering if it's quiet when I turn the wheel when stopped and noisier when I'm moving. Got a minute to explain to a lady how this works mechanically? Also any comments about safety would be appreciated. I'll watch for your reply. Thanks

The drive shafts (you have two and four CV joints ) can make noise especially when turning with some accelleration but if bad could cause an assortment of noise or eventually a breakdown. If the veh doesn't make a sound sitting still - it's a clue that these are suspect. They only move when the car is. They should be checked to at least rule them out, Good luck,
