1997 Mercury Mountaineer 5.o 4wd When taking off real fast the car makes a thumping noise in front end If you take off slow no noise One mechanis says transfer case another says exhaust bracket. Transfer diagnosis says chain is slipping on gears Is this acurate a chain and gears system.

I'm not the best at 4X4 but it's not chain driven - I'm pretty dang sure of that. Check out the smaller stuff first like u-joints, slip joints and and rubber mounts,
