My Kia Sorento 2006 has only done 49,000kms and is serviced every 5,000kms. The engine was noisy and heaving and the steering almost jammed completely. When towed to the agent, I expected to replace a broken fan belt or similar but instead was shocked to hear that the fault was a bolt snapped in the engine and malfunctioned a pulley which bent the crankshaft!? I have a huge estimate for repairs US$2,000+. A bent crankshaft!!! has anyone ever heard of such a thing? The car has never been in an accident and only driven 49,000kms. I suspect faulty parts are the culprit and intend to contact KIA directly but would be interested to know of anyone who can shed light on this matter. Thanks in advance!

I've heard of and seen some wild stuff and that's right up there. This sort of thing has so far mostly been abuse so have your documents and hope you get some satisfaction but wouldn't be surprised if this is a tough nut to prove. Have seen engines that didn't make it five miles from brand new that slipped by quality controls but not that lasted even your low miles and pull this on you.

Good luck,

Thanks for your comments - everyone I have mentioned this to today have been surprised and said that the car would need to have had a major collision to bend the crankshaft, its not an everyday occurrence - as it happens, I was driving to work yesterday morning when it happened out of the blue and thankfully I was on a road where I could pull over easily. Being a lady, I don't know that much about car engines but a friend said its strange how the garage were able to say it was a bent crankshaft before opening up the front of the engine (which they would need to do to see the crankshaft in the first place).

The ones I've known either busted right away when new and most were engines that were over revved up and strange things would break up to needing a whole engine or at least monster work. I've been told a harmonic balancer if an engine is run without one can cause damage but just never happened to run across that?
