Just got tires and now I hear a noise when de-accelerating.? Sign In

2004
Ford
Explorer XLT
Not sure on engine size
45,000

I went and purchased some used tires for my 2004 Ford Explorer. When I left the tire place I was going about 55-60 on the highway and took my foot off the gas and heard what to me sounded like the tire rubbing intermittently and I could feel it in the steering wheel. I went back to the tire place and they put different ones on and I left and drove home (about 7 miles) and it was fine.

I go to work this morning and it is fine for about 10 miles. Then out of nowhere it starts doing it again.

This is not when I apply the brake, but when I just let off the gas an de-accelerate.

Im worried something may have got messed up when they replaced the tires although I doubt it and Im not sure how I would go about pursuing it if need be.

Could it be my alignment?

Any suggestions?

Thank you,
Jeff

Alignment alone is not really a noise maker.

Not sure if this is related or not to USED tires or what. Just maybe in hoisting vehicle something got bent or a dust shield bent for brakes??

Real hard to say without actually taking wheels off and looking for something. Are you satisfied that wheels are tight and any trim parts back on properly? These things must be known right and if you can't do that yourself it needs to go back or be checked out.

This is open to a lot of possibilites so don't quit till you find just what this is,

Yea... I thought it was just the tires at first, but since they changed them to another set it did it again, but it wasn't until after 15 or so miles.

Ok: It just plain has to be checked out - tire place or probably better a shop that does general repair. It just may be a cooincidence. There are so may items (brakes, bearings, joints, shafts, etc) that when the forces shift from accellerating to decellerating that could make a noise it's an open book right now.

A noise is a warning so whether you take on finding it youself or have help is up to you. I don't know what I can do from here with this problem,

Tom,

Thanks for the info. I drove to lunch and tried real hard to hear where it was coming from and it seemed like the passenger side. I looked behind the tire and there is some sort of ?rubber/composite? sheet of material that must block dirt/dust etc and it was sticking out. I pushed it back in where the other side was seated. Hopefully this will fix it. If not I will take your advise and take the vehicle somewhere. Definitely don't need any front end steering issues.

Thanks again.

At the rough description that sounds like a "dust" shield to direct dirt and water properly for the front brakes. Some can bend and get close enough to touch and simply bending back a bit could be the whole deal. You could remove that wheel, spin that rotor and see where something like you described was too close or could have been bent in just swapping out wheels and tires. If tires are not the correct size for some reason that's another issue.
There should be a decal on door jam suggesting what tires the vehicle should have and the suggested pressures too,

Update

I stopped by a ma and pa shop on the way home and the guy was totally baffled. He thought it could be the transmission. When I got home I called the most reputable transmission shop I know ( or any I know knows) and the guy said to make absolutely sure the tires were exactly the same in every aspect. I told him they were all the same size but the fronts were Goodyear and the rears were Michelin. He said he has people come in at least once a week describing the problem I have and it is because they don't have the same sizes or in some cases like Ford and Jeep the same exact tires on all 4 axles.

I went to the closest tire shop because I didn't want to drive it much and I asked the guy if he ever had a person come in with a problem like mine (without giving him details about exactly what it was doing) and he told me about a customer that came in a few months back with an Expedition and described exactly what I was feeling. So I'm pretty confident he wasn't trying to just get a sale.

I don't know yet if this fixes my issue but once I pick it up this afternoon I will update this tomorrow. Hopefully this fixes my problem and can help other people in my situation.

Thankyou for that update and it's totally plausable. I didn't recall asking if all four were matched used tires but when anything 4x4 or AWD especially is involved exactness does matter.

Even tire brands with the same exact tire size can be slightly different brand new. Always best to keep things the same as possible.

Every vehicle but especially those mentioned it's critical to routinely rotate tires as per suggestion in owner's manual. One my own it's every oil change and never exceeding 3,000 miles. PITA but it maintains even wear and a fine time to keep track of brake wear too while wheel is off and catch stuff early.

Personally I don't know of just one problem like the noise noted for all with mismatched tires. I would still be looking for other causes of noise. In theory toying with tire pressure should be able to cover this up so some degree. This adds to the importance of checking tire pressure on a routine basis also and take note when one is off vs the others indicating leakage.

Thanks for the follow up and good luck getting it straightened out,

Ok.

I've put about 30 miles on it since I got all 4 new tires for it yesterday and the problem is gone. The place I got the used tires from was reluctant to give me a refund but we did come to an agreement. One thing I've learned through all of this is not everyone is out to get you. I was very afraid of people just wanting to take advantage of me with my lack of auto knowledge, but with a little research on the internet it's possible to find people who are very helpful and not out to make a quick buck.

Thanks for all the help Tom.
