So. I took my car to the mechanic a month ago for a squealing noise that sounded to me like a bearing... however they changed the Alt. the day I took it home I heard the same noise... I took it back, they couldn't find it... a couple of days ago I took it back as I thought I smelled burning rubber on the driver's side of the car... AND b/c I still heard the sound... the guys couldn't hear the noise until I turned on the defrost... but when I turn it off it doesn't go away (the noise)... so they were going to switch out my alt. later this week, except today on my way to work my volt light came on as well as check engine, then my cd player shut off and my heater (this is not good when you live in Edmonton AB, Canada and it is -20 C ...) so I made it back to the shop, and left it with them... I don't think they know what it is... Is it a bad alt? (they also switched out the battery)... is it the compressor? if it is the compressor can it be bypassed as I don't need AC but I do Need deforst...
HELP...

Quality of belt and belt tension are critical. If A/C compressor is kicking on it's choking on liquid refrigerant and can screech a belt and damage it to boot. Unplug at compressor for now to rule that out. Can you spin the alt fins in your hand? Shouldn't be able to.

Belt can cause wild noise like a bad bearing by itself. Spray some WD-40 on it and if it shuts right up that belt could be an issue but I think the compressor was the first problem. You just have an idle pulley at head of compressor with it unplugged and A/C has nothing to do with defrost working but asking for defrost will enable the compressor just to excercise it in the off season but only if warm enough or it should shut down compressor by itself. That may need looking into if unplugging it works,
