Quality of belt and belt tension are critical. If A/C compressor is kicking on it's choking on liquid refrigerant and can screech a belt and damage it to boot. Unplug at compressor for now to rule that out. Can you spin the alt fins in your hand? Shouldn't be able to. Belt can cause wild noise like a bad bearing by itself. Spray some WD-40 on it and if it shuts right up that belt could be an issue but I think the compressor was the first problem. You just have an idle pulley at head of compressor with it unplugged and A/C has nothing to do with defrost working but asking for defrost will enable the compressor just to excercise it in the off season but only if warm enough or it should shut down compressor by itself. That may need looking into if unplugging it works, T
