Grinding/Roaring Noise when in Gears 1&2

I have a '96 Saturn SL2. The mileage is around 180k, and sadly I don't know what the engine size would be. * When I start the car, only normal engine noises occur. * When I put the car in Neutral and rev up to 2-3k rpm, the engine sounds normal. * When accelerating and in gears 1 or 2, the is a heavy "roaring" noise that sounds like it's coming from underneath the passenger-side floorboard. The dash sounds like it's vibrating with the heavy shuddering. * When the transmission gets to gear 3 or higher, the engine calms and sounds normal. * When braking to stop, the rpms can go all the way down to 1-1.5k before the gears downshift and the noise returns, though -much- less loud. * When in reverse, only normal engine noises occur. Also: * When braking, I hear little metal tinkling noises, as if bb's were rolling forward under the dash or across the metal of the engine or something. I've poked around a little before posting this, and perhaps it's an engine/transmission mount? Does the transmission physically lift while in certain gears such that it would vibrate against the frame? Mostly, I'm concerned that gears 1 and 2 are being ground to paste or something. I'm on a limited budget, so hoping this isn't the death-toll for my car. Thanks for any replies you can give me!
