Engine rev after shut off	Sign In

Hi all,

Lately my engine has been revving after I turn the key and shut off the ignition, likes its trying to start back up or something. It will rev and rumble for a moment then shut off. Any ideas?

88 Toyota Pickup, manual transmission
174k miles
Engine size: no idea.

That's called dieseling. It can be caused by an engine idling too high, running too hot or with a severe vacuum leak.

Now that you mention it, the truck does occasionally idle very high. Often when I start it up in the mornings and leave it to warm up for a couple minutes, it will start gradually idling higher and higher until it gets to a worrysome level, and won't stop unless I tap the gas pedal. It then returns to a low, normal idle level.

Is this a critical issue? Should I take it to a mechanic or is it something that can be done at home?

It needs to be resolved by whomever is qualified.
