Dry, scratchy sound from Honda Civic Sign In

Hi there, I've got a '99 Honda Civic.. erm.. LX? The lower end one... about 80,000 miles, just bought it (used). First time I drove it around, sounded fine.

Soon after (about a day... during which I drove it home about 1,000 miles), it started making a dry, sort of scratchy sound from the engine (I think)... at least from the front.

I checked the oil before I left and it seemed fine, I can't imagine it's low so fast, but I know I should check that... my other thoughts were that something was like.. stuck underneath my car, or in the engine or something...

The sound seems to mainly be there when I accelerate, but simply being on causes it to some degree..

Sorry if this is vague, I'll try and be more specific if need be...

Certainly check all fluid levels, tire pressure all things to get a base starting point with the car.

The most common noise like you described is the heat shields on the exhaust parts/converters get rusted. they can make some funky sounds. You can fix those without total replacement if at a certain state by just using hose clamps - they can go one to another for a large diameter and snug them up so that they still work as heat shields but stop the noise. Total replacement of the parts is nasty expensive and just cutting them off is not a good idea.

A car can use a quart of oil in 1,000 miles but those usually don't. Start your history now. It also uses a timing belt that should have been done by now and if you don't know, find out or just replace it if there is any doubt as that can be a nightmare without warning.

It's worth a check out all over. Spare tire pressure, jack there and works - - all that stuff. Get a new oil change if not just done as your new starting point.

Other noises could be belts, half shafts, brakes but not if you are standing still, loose parts left loose by mistake like air cleaner stuff and so on,

T
