Banging in Ford Ranger

Greetings all. 1995 Ford Ranger 2.3L rear wheel drive. While accelerating the car sort of bangs and shakes at different points. It doesn't feel like the transmission is doing it, i was told it was the driveshaft. Is the sort of thing that a DIYer with tools can replace himself, or do I need special equipment? Furthermore, if it's the rear end and not the actual shaft, is that something that I can remove -the rear axles are under alot of torque- without an impact wrench? I'm looking to buy this car for I am on a student budget, hoping not to get killed on repair costs. Thanks for looking.

Call your local Ford dealer. I think(not sure)there was a TSB on that problem. If I remember it was for the front yoke on the driveshaft causing the problem. Like I said, I am not sure so call the dealer and ask.

Thanks for the quick response. After checking carfax, it has been found that the car was used commercially by two different companies. Presumably the car hasn't been driven with banging the last 130k miles. I am curious if there is any way to check which part of the drivetrain is causing the problem. A) is there any website or posting which has a diagram of a rear wheel drive drivetrain with labeled parts such as driveshaft, UV joint, yolk etc. B) is there any way that a layman like me can look underneath and see which part needs replacement without having a mechanic tell me.
Also the shift "rod" is very tight to pull into and out of park, i was told it's normal on Ford's that the bushings wear out. Does this sound right?

The tight shifting is not normal. Is the shifter loose? If it is, then the bushings may be worn. Possibly the bolts that hold the cable to the bottom of the shift rod in the cable. Also the cable might be rusted inside and need the shift cable replaced. Let us know.
