My '96 Nissan 300zx with about 112,000 miles is running fairly well. The only problem is that when I accelerate faster than usual, the engine transition from making a low-pitched hum to a much higher pitched sound coming from something like a tin can with a rock rolling around inside of it. It doesn't seem to affect the performance, but the sound is unsettling. I don't ever really come across the issue if I accelerate slowly but it's really annoying when minivans are passing me from a stop light.

Can you record the noise and upload it to a video hosting site and then paste the link in here? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Seems consistent with an exhaust heat shield coming apart. Sometimes just a tap on them with rubber hammer or even on tail pipe with engine off can make a noise. If so there are assorted ways to deal with some up to replacing that whole pipe or part with those on them. Should be an easy check to rule that in or out, T
