ABS problems...I think Login - Sign Up

I have a 1997 Chevrolet S-10(4 cyclinder) with approx. 90K miles. A couple of weeks ago my ABS light came on right after start up. Since then, the break peddle kicks back and there's a grinding/vibrating/slipping just before I come to a complete stop. This is an intermittent problem as it doesn't happen all the time. My rotors and breaks are fine. Could a ABS sensor cause this and if so, how can I disable the ABS system until I can get the money to repair it?

Yes, that's usually what causes it. The issue is that one of the sensors is not accurate and when coming to a stop the ABS module sees one wheel going slower so it thinks it's locking up and it releases that brake. that's what the pedal buzzing is.

You can disable it by removing the fuse but the ABS light will remain on.

Thank you. I assumed that was the problem but wasn't 100% sure. Would you recommend changing the sensors myself or letting a professional handle this one? I'm usually a do-it-myselfer but I'm not familiar at all with ABS. I assume I'll have to have a diagnostics ran to troubleshoot which sensor is giving me problems. If the sensors are simple to change out then doing it myself is the route I'd prefer to go with.

Is it 2WD or 4WD?

On the 4WD, it's part of the hub bearing but the 2WD takes regular 2 piece bearings so the sensor appears to be separate. The flat rate calls for just under an hour to change it. The caliper and rotors have to be removed to access itso it doesn't look too hard. As you said though, your going to need someone to diagnose which one it is..

Also, I have tried to locate the ABS fuse. I thought it would be located in the drivers side fuse panel but I don't see anything that refers to ABS. Is it located somewhere else or am I just blind?

In the underhood fuse box, look for fuse #12 which is 10A marked brake. This may take out your brake lights though so if it does your going to have to go to the fusible link in the engine compartment. It's a gray fusible link on a red wire. It should be attached to the power distribution box.
