99 camaro rs - shaking and squeaking Sign In

So I've had this problem for two weeks:
I was on my way home from school ~20 mile trip and suddenly my car starts making horrible squeaking noises and loses engine power. I barely made it home. A few days later a friend of mine who is an automotive engineer says that since its not a major rattling noise its not as bad as he figured it would be. He told me that this years models had issues with the Harmonic balancer, which I pulled and there was nothing wrong with it or the seals associated with it.
Also when I give it any throttle it shows changes in engine oil pressure.
Any information would help. :)

Check engine light on or flashing?

Can you video the noise or the engine while it is running rough and post the link in here?

That's not good........That sure sounds like a rod bearing knock from what I could hear.

Sounds like one, yes, but the guy that I talked to said it wasn't that...would that cause a fluctuation in the oil levels?
Also, could it still be the balancer? even though I'm really doubting it.

Re: 99 camaro rs - shaking and squeaking Sign In

I'm not there to see the engine, to be able to tell if it's coming from the pan area......But from what little I heard that definitely sounds like a bearing knock.....

The balancer isn't going to make that kind of a knock...

Pull the dipstick and look at the oil on it real close, see if you can see some real tiny gold colored fillings mixed with the oil, that would be an indication of a bearing coming apart. Depending on how bad the bearing is, it could affect oil pressure...
If you could narrow down the cyl it's coming from you could pull that plug wire to see if it has an effect on the knock....

I pulled it the other day, nothing other than oil, it was high, so I'm going to drain it and replace it tomorrow.

Re: 99 camaro rs - shaking and squeaking Sign In

I agree with Sid. That does sound like rod knock. If it is automatic it could be a broken flex plate or torque converter. You could pull the oil pan off and check for loose rod ends. Oil pressure is going to fluctuate with engine rpm, but if is a dipping down every once in a while that could be a rod bearing that is spinning doing that.

Could it be that there's too much oil?
For some reason the oil was higher than its supposed to be. I haven't put any oil in it since about a month ago when I bought it.

No, but it could bean that the oil is diluted with gasoline.

Well, it could be, it's definitely not the balancer...as likely as it was, I'm going to take the pan off and check the bearings ASAP

Re: 99 camaro rs - shaking and squeaking Sign In

Pull the converter cover & check the bolts and flex plate 1st.......The knock sound a bit to deep for a flexplate but it's way easier to check that than the rod and a cracked flexplate does sound similar......

If you haven't changed the oil yet, strain it with cheese cloth or something that will catch small pieces, this way you can tell if something is coming apart internally.....
