99 Ford Contour, humming noise when started

My ford Contour sport ('99) has recently started making humming noises when I start up the car fresh. It sounds like a low frequency hum rather than the more high pitched, screechy noises that I tend to associate with belt slippage. It only tends to happen when the car is started fresh. After a few minutes (~20sec-2min), the hum disappears. The sound's pitch and loudness can change depending on what gear i'm in. It tends to be more prominent in drive or reverse, less so in neutral. If i hear the hum as i'm backing out of the driveway, I can shift to neutral and the hum either decreases in loudness or goes away entirely. If it is still present in neutral, if I give it some gas then the hum disappears. Does anyone know what this noise could be? Is it a potential problem? Thanks in advance for any assistance! Navin

I would look at the idle speed control. Ford's are bad about them going bad. If you can get it to do it, find the valve and tap on it. See if noise decreases. If so, the idle motor is going. Here is a generic picture of one. Being way2old is why I need help from younger minds

i'm thinkin''' just a thought-sometimes when a transmission front pump starts to go it will make what some refer to as a hum, others a whine type noise that usually goes away after a couple a minutes.....how many miles on the vehicle?

Thanks for the replies! This has been very helpful! The car has ~49,000miles on it. I live in San Francisco, so most of my miles are hilly and very stop-and-go. Thanks! Navin

Just for a hoot: Try spraying some WD-40 on the grooves of the belt before you start it up and see if the noise is gone. If that stops it this could just be a fussy belt. If it's original a good new one should solve it or I use silicone grease on them and they shut up for months. Again if so they do make a "quiet" belt by various manufacturers, Goodyear, Dayco perhaps others that work but do stretch to their limits earlier than a regualar belt. Hey...... if you have 49K on that "Lombard?" street that's probably enough for that car T
