Hi. I have a 95 Toyota Tercel, automatic, 4 cylinder, over 150 k miles. I love my car, it's great on gas. But I have a few questions about it's recent behavior.

First, background information. My dad knew the car needed it's wheel bearings replaced. I FOOLISHLY listened to my father-in-law and had a family friend do the work. Was supposed to save me a lot of money. First, he told me I need to replace the brake pads, the wheel bearings, and the axel on the front passenger side (he said the axel was rusted almost in two). So he did the work, put the wrong kind of axel on, the car sounded terrible, so he replaced with the right kind of axel (I had to take the first one back, get a refund, and buy a new one). But driving the car home, it was still making a sort of metal grinding noise near the front passenger tire area.

So I took the car to a local mechanic. He said the wheel bearings were installed incorrectly and it had ruined them. He had to replace the wheel bearings again. After that, I had the front wheels aligned.

Now, its been a few weeks and I hear that same kind of metal grinding noise near my front passenger wheel area. It is especially prominent when I've taken my foot off the gas and am letting the car slowly stop. You can hear the noise with each rotation of the tire. Also, when I apply the brakes, the steering wheel vibrates.

What could be wrong with my car?

Arggh! I think you need to go back to the real mechanic and see if more was damaged with improper parts. Were the brakes ever tended to? Perhaps even if they were replaced they have the problem now??
