93 Plymouth noise/smell

My 93 Plymouth Acclaim (salvage car) has 111,000 miles. This a.m. it started to smell badly of burning--not rubber, almost electrical/rubber smell. The engine began making a constant humming noise. The smell is not in the engine itself, but smells worse in the front seat.
I am unemployed and broke, so praying this is not a major fix.

First I'd check belt for proper tension, then take it off and spin the items it drives for feel especially alternator but check all for free-play or noise when spun by hand. Bad or loose belt could make both noise and odor from slipping. This is difficult to pin down over the web so you have to check yourself. Good bearings from tensioner, idler pulleys should make no noise and no free-play at all. Alternator may have some noise but coast nicely with belt off. PS pump, water pump will have some feel but be pretty smooth.
I'm guessing it's a belt driven or belt issue by description,
