91 Jeep Noise From The Back.. Sign In

Iv'e asked this Question Before but on another Forum and am wondering what you all think...

I own a 1991 Jeep Cherokee Laredo 4WD and while im going just above 50 Mph it sounds like a muffled humming is coming from the Back..Plus while im going around a Bend in the road that goes right it makes it louder but it doesn't when i go left, it in fact quiets itself and comes right back. Also when i let off the gas just a little it make a weird sound, which i think is funny cuz it sounds like an f1 or if i had turbo, But its really making me nervous to even drive it.......Pls Help

?? Suggests an axle bearing. At first guess I would suspect left side as the weight shift to that side when turning right,

Not sure - it needs further investigating. Wheel bearings front or rear can fail such that they sound like one wheel has an aggressive snow tire on it and can go louder or quieter on turns or loads.

I just don't know how rear bearings are done on this Jeep. Some are easier than others and some require a new axle as axle could be the "race" for the bearing.

A maybe is that gear oil is leaking out also and can be seen on inside of brake holdown plate or on tires on inside - check that anyway,

Alright I Checked That Out, Inside Tires Look good. But Now Im not Getting Enough Acceleration Like I had Before. It Takes A Little While To Get Up To Speed..

This noise and problems with accelleration are probably two different problems. The miles you have and no gear oil leaks is interesting. Does the diff have any in it?

Are you up for pulling the axles out to check out the bearings? Agian - I just don't know on this how they come out without seeing the style used. When Jeep was under AMC's control (what year did that change to Chysler?) they could have used whatever was available. It may still be some International Harvester style??

Ok: Did some surfing and there are two possible rear diffs in this thing. A Chrysler or a Dana and there is supposed to me a tag or mark on the housing.

Above is one of the possible bearings - none are expensive and they are doable DIY with some common sense and tools.

Axles come out and then you just have to see how the bearing is retained. Some you must dump the gear oil and take a "C" clip out from the center of diff and some can be done at the wheel only. I suffer from CRS (can't remember 'stuff') sometimes and just plain don't know which but with common tools it can be done - snap ring pliers, - a tool to remove grease seal is real helpful and a way to refill gear oil - many can be done with squeeze bottles or buy a grease gun type thing that removes or adds oils. If just available to replace at just the wheel you don't have to dump the gear oil.

If you can see and feel the bearing you'll know it's bad and go from there.

If this is bad it needs attention to avoid further damage. You decide, and the operational problem should wait till this is taken care of.

Let us know if you want to tackle that........
