90 Legend Engine Noise (Videos Included) Sign In

hi everyone, i just got a 1990 Acura Legend back in march with 150,000 miles, 2 door 5 speed trans. i have some engine noise that i am having a hard time diagnosing. i've included the videos of both Cool Idle and a Warmed up Idle and it's coming from the Timing Belt Area. here are the recent maintenance i have done so far.

- Timing Belt Change
-Water Pump Change
- Tensioner Change
- New Battery
-New Coolant
- New Spark Plugs
-2000 Miles on 5w-30 w/ Lucas
-210 Miles on 10w-40 w/ Marvel Mystery Oil.

It had the noise before i've changed the Timing Belt, Tensioner and Water Pump.

as for the blown fuse, i keep blowing my horn and brake light fuse as they are the same fuse. wierd thing is when i got the car the horn didn't work, i discovered it had a blown fuse. changed it and it did work. and then it stopped working but the fuse wasn't blown. changed the fuse again and it still didnt work. now it blows like every week to two weeks. it's un-safe and irritating driving with no brake lights.... if you guys can help me find my possible short and offer any suggestions that could help with the engine noise. it's really loud at start-up and then it goes really quiet at running temp. i don't know if it's lifter noise because it comes from the timing belt area or somewhere i can't find, looking for a way to quiet and help my engine as i do not have the time or money to rebuild, or swap my engine. i really appreciate all the help. thanks!

The first thing you need to do is stop driving that thing immediately until you find the problem. That sounds like a bearing in some type of pulley is failing. This could be a water pump, a drive belt pulley, an alternator, an A/C compressor or a tensioner or idler pulley for the timing belt. If it's the latter and it lets go, you will be buying an engine so get to the bottom of it soon. I would first try removing all the drive belts and see if the noise remains. That will eliminate everything external.

That means it's internal. From where I'm sitting it sounds like it's in the timing belt area but obviously I'm not there. Your going to have to remove the covers to explore. That is an interference engine so if the timing belt jumps for any reason and the engine is rotated, it will bend the valves when the piston hits them so this can be very serious.
It's also possible the noise could be coming from the back of the engine like a flywheel bolt hitting something.

i understand and am aware of this. what are some ways that i can try to pin point the location of the noise for starters, and i am more than sure that the timing is correct as i have set TDC numerous times before removing the old belt and such. any tips on locating noise and things to test for?

There are no special tricks, just follow the sound to it's source. Getting the car in the air and listening from below may be helpful.

would a stethoscope, or anything help? i've been told it could be carbon build up and to try sea foaming, or that it could be sludge, or my crankshaft and stuff.

No, that's not likely carbon. A stethoscope might help if you get it isolated to a small area but just rely on your ears to do that.

hmmm..okay, it's just wierd that its only loud on start up but when running temp hits its quiet, would you happen to know any things that would run quieter at running temp? i have installed a mechanical oil gauge on my dash and i noticed that at start its at 80 then drops to 60, then 40 then 20 and then at running temp or warm the oil PSI is at about 15-20 and is running quieter. i was thinking of running thinner oil like 0w-20. but am currently running 10w-40 with MMO which had thinned the oil. 10w-40 alone was louder then when i had 5w-30 with lucas.

Side note: Quit it with the additives! Oil has what was intended. MMO is more like ATF - was great for sludge in the 50s.

You've seen credible oil pressure of 15 PSI! Not good,

Something is loose & getting ready to come apart.......

You should be able to narrow down what area its coming from.... If it's the frt then the covers need to be R&R'd and everything inspected....Take a good look at the tensioner, you shouldn't be able to compress it by hand...

You said you are aware of the dangers....ok....... But this problem needs to be found & found quickly and don't rev it like that any more, there is no need to do that........
