2010 Toyota Corolla mystery noise Sign In

My 2010 Corolla is making an awful noise. Problem is-- it's not consistent so the dealer says there's no problem.

Squeaking noise when coasting in traffic in first gear. Sometimes this can escalate to sound like metal on metal. As soon as I press the brakes, the noise immediately stops. When I go back to accelerating or even just coasting, the noise returns. Speeding up to get into 2nd+ gear-- no noise at all.

Brakes have been recently replaced. Toyota diagnostic picked up nothing. The noise seems to only happen once the car has been driven a bit and has warmed up.

Any ideas? I'm at my wit's end. Thank you!

That sounds like it's just brake pad squeal.

It's annoying but harmless. There are a number of small things that can be done to help with that problem but it's always been an ongoing battle with disc brakes.

I don't think it is. The squeal only happens if the car is moving. If I press the brake, even, a little-- it stops immediately. I also notice that I tend to hear it while turning.

The metal on metal noise is much worse. Very loud, sounds like rusted metal scraping against metal. Only in first gear, only when coasting or at slow speeds.

Why ask us if you think you know better?

Ah Geez. It's just as Hammer said, sounds like a brake sensor would. If it doesn't do it when witnessed what do you expect if just replaced? It's totally possible for a new one to be bent and touching now not in the right spot. Take a look. If you don't have them and still all in a twist over it take it back again and make it happen for them. If touching and pad is new your call take it back or just bend it out of the way yourself,

It doesn't even have to be a sensor causing it. It can simply be the surface of the pad making light contact with the rotor but I'm not wasting a bunch of time explaining anything if he thinks he knows better..

Don't think I know better.... but it's been to two shops AND a Toyota dealer and they all say the brakes are fine. So I'm just wondering if there's anything else that I could suggest they check out.

Thanks for the advice!

Yes, the brakes are fine on visual inspection as far as being worn out but they are the cause of your noise as I already stated.

When was the last time you had your pads and rotors changed?
Inferior quality pads and / or rotors will cause the noise that you are experiencing.

Were those shops able to duplicate the noise? Did the noise start after the brake work was done?
