2007 Ford Explorer Loud Squeaking/Squealing Wheels Sign In

2007
Ford
Explorer
4.0 V6
44,000 miles

Hey everyone,

About 2-3 months ago, this bad squeaking/squealing started up while driving down the road. It only happened every 3-4 weeks and now lately it has been happening every 1-2 days.

-happens every 1-2 days at all speeds

-gets VERY loud

-squeak/squeal gets faster as I accelerate

-completely goes away when I brake HARD. Moderate pressure helps it a little bit but If I slam on the brakes, sometimes getting the ABS on, the squeak/squeal will go away for another day or so.

- Does not get quieter or louder when I turn

-Brakes seem quite rusty from outside glance (rotors, calipers, etc.)

Thanks in advance for any help or advice you guys can give me

Since brking does seem to affect it it really needs to be looked at thoroughly.

It could be something as simple as glazed pads but it could also be something serious....... No way to tell from here so you really should have any experience tech check it out.

You don't want to mess around with your brks..... One way or another.....you're gonna stop..... You should be the one who decides when & where...

So true and isn't funny if not at one's descretion!

The vehicle at 44K is probably up for a plain brake job for the first round. If a keeper and they are worn out I suggest paying the extra for the brand name "Centric" for rotors and pads as they are remarkably rust resistant and the ceramic pads last, quiet and make no brake dust. Price once and the payback for the next 40,000 or more.

I live in a rust belt and the dang rotors will gun rust overnight here and that get impregnated into the pads and they can get noisy or worse don't stop properly.

Can't know what pads have now but many use a "screech" sensor to alert you that they are about worn out. This a generic pic of the bit of metal that will make noise when it gets to touch rotor............

Makes such an annoying noise you won't ignore it!

Pic may be copyrighted and not show up....... If it shows it's like the lighter colored metal thing which works like a fingernail on a chaulk board or worse!
