2005 Dodge Neon, Clicking Noise coming From Engine Sign In

Hi, I have a 2005 Dodge Neon, it has about 51,000 miles on it. Lately there has been a clicking noise when Im driving the car. It sounds like its coming from the belt and where the pistons are. Whenever I push the gas pedle, theres a fast clicking sound coming from the engine. Then when the car is parked there is a clicking sound still. Iv asked my friends what they think it is and they said I probably need to change the oil. Can you give me your opinion on what it can be?? thank you!

Re: 2005 Dodge Neon, Clicking Noise coming From Engine Sign In

Noises are tricky to guess at by nature but from what you describe this is engine speed related and nothing to do with vehicle speed.

I suggest checking all service is up to date not just oil changing. Check belt and belt driven accessories for the source of the noise.

An oil change should be on a schedule along with routine checking of fluid levels, tires, tire pressures all should be listed in the owner's manual.

Just changing the oil now which it may need is a bit too simplistic for a fix for the noise. If low or very low find out why. That goes for any fluid that needs adding - find out why. Don't wait for warnings from the dash but know how or get someone to periodically check the basics even between scheduled service.

Do have a full service shop go thru the car checking that everything is up to date. This noise could be simple as needing a belt or telling of something more serious.

It's about as fun as watching paint dry but do read the owner's manual. The sales pitch is over, the manual is there full of suggestions to maintian the car and both of you will benefit. Keep a log and minimize surprises and know the state of tires, brakes, belts, battery right along,

T
