2003 Kia Sorento clicking noise Sign In

2003 Kia Sorento EX, 6 cyl, 130,000 miles

When the vehicle is cold I can drive for about 5 minutes with no noise. As the car heats up slowly a clicking sound develops in the front left side of the car. To me it sounds like a playing card in bicycle spokes. The longer the car is driven, the louder the sound gets and the sound decelerates as the vehicle decelerates. Below 5 miles an hour the sound stops. just before the sound stops the sound changes to what I would describe as a metal clamp around a shaft that is too small. I "think" I vaguely smell a burnt smell after this happens.

I am hearing this very loudly with the driver window down but can hear/ feel it with the window up too.

Any thoughts? (Pray its a cheap fix!!)

Hard to say on noises as described. Brakes, wheel bearing or a cv joint. If you are smelling something a caliper may be part frozen and the wheel would be warm or hot vs others. All of the parts that turn need be checked. I've seen rotors get a rust ring where the pads don't hit the last bit on outside make noise and brakes may feel funny. That usually happens when brakes are replace with pads only without tuning rotors (doubt they are thick enough or replacing them.

If you aren't going to fix this yourself a good tech will find it. Being there with you symptoms would really help,

Tom pretty much covered all the bases. It's tough not being able to hear it. Does the noise change when you apply the brks or if you are turning the wheels?

Whether you do this youself or take it in, you should look at it soon, sometime driving on a problem only makes it more expensive.....

Turning the wheels makes it go away for a short time. Ill pull the wheel off tomorrow and check for frozen brake parts. Thanks for the help. Just hoping its not a transmission going bad.

With noises like that we can never be certain. Wheel bearings make a distinct sound usually,

Re: 2003 Kia Sorento clicking noise Sign In

Sounds like it could possibly be a bad bearing. If your left bearing was bad, while driving if you turn to the right. That shifts all the weight to the left and the noise would get louder. If you turn to the left all the weight goes right and the noise would get quieter. This is one way to help diagnose the problem & side.

You can check for play in the wheel while it's in the air but in the early stages of a bearing failure you don't get play so it makes it harder to diagnose.

Also make sure the tires tread isn't "choppy" . Irregular thread can cause a similar noise....

Just thought I would follow up. The noise was the front drive shaft coming from the differential. Need to have the entire unit replaced. Dealer parts wants 800 for the driveshaft assembly and the repair shop cannot find another outlet to get one. OUch!!

Good to see you back! I did check profile whatever it is just signed in - 7 posts and 6 are moved to the "Bin." I left this for now - delete last few if you see fit but I kinda thought a reply/edit for a while might help - I dunno. Haven't had much time here lately,

Tom
