2003 Honda Accord engine rattling Sign In

I've got a 2003 Honda Accord v6 with 100,000 miles on it.

Recently it's started making a rattling noise about every 10 seconds. The car sounds fine normally, then after about 10 seconds it sounds like something switches, and a rattling/frequent clicking noise is heard for about 10 seconds, then something switches and it goes back to normal. This cycle repeats over and over as the car runs.

Click here to see the video I uploaded to YouTube of of the problem. If someone wants me to film under the hood I can post that later if it's needed.

Anyone have an idea as to what's going on?

Nice way to demonstrate a noise! Only as good as the speakers I have and seems like a metal to metal scraping sound to me - perhaps a pulley that can touch - still difficult no matter what you do.

Since it will do this with some predictability - try to use a mechanics stethoscope/listening rod to close in on exact area. NOTE - THAT CAN BE DANGEROUS SO USE ALL CAUTION WITH AN ENGINE RUNNING! Listen at trans end also - not just belt driven pulleys. Might even see this and something shined up that shouldn't be.

At first I was going to suggest a heat shield on exhaust parts as they are somewhat common and it still could be that but to me the sound was more rotary in nature,

Are you running the heater in defrost mode, or have the A/C turned on? I'm wondering if it could be the A/C compressor cycling? The electric cooling fan may also be coming on at the same time?

Excellent Loren! Could be clutch on compressor - hope you heard the noise as said it seemed to me like a metalic scraping rubbing more than a rattle. Cluch could do that and they do cylcle on defrost mode,

I'm in Houston, which means I'm always running the A/C. A friend told me it might be the compressor, but I wanted to ask online to see if anyone else had an idea.

So I'm guessing this is something I should take to my mechanic then, and not something that I could easily fix on my own?

Josh: So you know a compressor will engage and disengage as the system is designed to or plain shut down under certain conditions.

What I'm trying to explain is that the compressor is both an idle pulley when disengaged (outer plate will stop) and has a bearing in that clutch. When engaged that bearing is actually no longer in use and bushings in the compressor are the acting bearings so it matters when it makes the noise.

Look at the outer plate. If noisy when it is still then it's really better news as that is replaceable and not likely to be a wild expense. If it's only making that noise when compressor is working then it's the compressor itself and best to unplug it such that it can't work anymore till fixed as it will just make things worse for the fix for that.

Take a look so you know ahead if you can nail it down to just that and take the appropriate actions. I don't think it's very DIY friendly to do a bearing or even install a new clutch on this car because of VERY tight working area and might need to send that out as the best approach.

Either way - it really can't be ignored as a bearing failure will cause problems, belt will fly off even if that one is on it's own it may run other items you must have,

I haven't had a chance to take it to the shop yet. I've got a paper due Monday, so hopefully next Tuesday I'll be able to take it in.
