2002 Olds Silhouette Van 3.4L V6 98k miles, I have noticed a whirring noise recently that starts once I reach 30 mph, it doesn't appear to be related to engine revving or not shifting gears, RPM's are normal and engine sound is quiet when at lights or idling at start-up. The noise reminds of an airplane in flight. Recently had low brake fluid light come on and I filled it up and it appears to be holding for last 2 weeks. No reduced braking power. This is my wife's vehicle so I'm not sure if the noise started prior to or after brake fluid warning light. No other warning lights or other issues that I have noticed. What could be causing the noise? Noise is still present when put in neutral when driving. It is still present when turning and on all road surfaces. No burnt smell after driving.

Hi - Not real sure about the noise or it's relationship to consumption of brake fluid.

THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM! A BRAKE SYSTEM IS NOT SUPPOSED TO CONSUME FLUID AT ANY SIGNIFICANT RATE. SOME WILL COINCIDE WITH BRAKE WEAR BUT THAT'S IT. THIS FAST MEANS A LEAK AND RISK OF TOTAL BRAKE FAILURE AND MUST BE ADDRESSED AT ONCE AS IT'S NOT SAFE LEFT THIS WAY AT ALL,

Its not consuming brake fluid. The light came on when my wife first started the car one morning but didn't stay on, I checked and it was a little low so I filled it to a proper level. It's been 2 weeks and it is still at the same level.

OK - Sorry about that confusion - I thought it only held a proper level for two weeks - that would mean trouble.

This noise thing might be a tire, or bearing. Sometimes rotating wheels/tires will help tell if it stays with a certain wheel or the place it came from.

By description brakes aren't usually associated with the noise you mentioned. Brake noises are usually grinding sounds, squeeks and will change character with brakes in use or off.

Noises are tricky to guess at but let's do chase it down as noises are warnings of something to fix,

T
