2000 V6 Toyota Camry "Clunks"

I recently purchased a 2000 Toyota Camry with approximately 92,000 miles. It's a V6, stick shift. I've noticed a "clunking sound" whenever I go over bumps or rough patches on the road. It is clearly coming from the right rear area of the car. I emptied my trunk of everything and it still clunked. My neighbor said to pull the seat off and make sure the bolt above the strut (I hope I'm using the right terms, I'm not much of a car person) was tight. It is tight, there are threads showing above the nut. I checked the muffler and a hanger was missing, allowing it to rattle side to side. I took some wire and wired the muffler to the chassis and it's still rattling. Any suggestions?

this clunking could also be caused by a bad strut or upper strut mount

I took it to a muffler shop, the hanger apparently wasn't missing, it was just bent. They bent it back into place. This changed the clunking a little bit, but it's definitely still there. Is there a way I can check the strut myself? This is the first car I've ever owned and I want to learn as much as I can. Thank you for your responses.

When cool enough - just wiggle the tail pipe and see if you can duplicate the noise. If still there the hanger needs more work. Struts: Just bounce the car by the bumper and see if it makes noise. If so - with a helper look at the strut while it's being bounced (keep bod out from underneath car please) and look for the loose spot - perhaps up top if it's that at all. Try bumping items (use judgement) with rubber hammer. If no luck get it on a lift and with help find the noise, T

I can't duplicate it. The muffler just doesn't sound the same. It doesn't seem to happen consistently either. Thanks for your help, I guess I'll just take it in. Our mechanic is an old family friend, and does a good job. Although he does take his sweet time occasionally.

Sometimes the inside of a muffler rusts even while leaving the outside looking good. Tone changes and sometimes you can hear that with the rubber hammer trick on muffler (carefully) or just an easy rev up and they might sound like sand/rocks in them. "Clunk" wouldn't be my description of that though - more of the tone change but who knows for sure? T
