Need a little advice on a 1998 Dodge Neon - 4 cylinder When the AC is on, it begins making a horrible squealing sound and I partially lose steering capability. It comes back when the compressor kicks back off. When the air is not on, it runs perfectly. Just wondering what I should be looking at when I take it to the mechanic. Don't want a brand new compressor if I don't have to. Also, is brake squeal common?

A/C Noise: The belt should be checked first. Is it tight enough? If not it may be stretched to its limit or self tensioner inoperative. If it is properly tentioned and A/C compressor can cause this type of load then it should be disabled now by unplugging it. Any chance of it being overcharged? Either way it should be checked as it's much better to fix the problem while a compressor can still work then after it self destructs. Brakes noise/squeel: Some can make some noise but in general the answer is no. You should know that they are not worn out and some will quiet down with cleaning if all else is well with them.... T
