1996 Dodge Dakota Sport Rear Diff. Noises Sign In

I recently purchased a 1996 Dodge Dakota Sport that was rolled onto its roof. It has a 5.2 litre V-8 with 126,000 miles. The truck was rolled on the drivers side starting with the rear tire. There was alot vibration in the rear. I lifted the truck to find out that the axle shaft was bent. I replaced the axle with no problems. As soon as I started to drive the truck, it would start making a whining noise coming from the rear end. The noise would only happen after about 20 miles per hour and would make the noise during acceleration and de-acceleration, but not at a maintained speed. If i took the truck out of gear and let it roll to a stop the noise would go away during the whole slow down process. There is no loss of acceleration, no hesitation, or any vibrations coming from the rear. Just this god awefull noise. Please help so I can get this great truck back on the road. Thanks.

IDK sport. With a history like that there's no telling for sure. It may have bent the housing of the differential too and game over for that one. You could do more checks for damage to ring and pinion, have rear end checked on alignment machine or give in and get a whole assembly making sure it has the same ratio - used is OK if you have access to a good salvage yard that has a clue of what's good or not.

You must have expected some problems knowing it rolled over?

i would agree with tom imo it sounds like your talking about "howling gears". id replace teh ring and pinion gears. but like tom said if it was rolled over youve gotta expect something.
