Or could it possibly be an air bubble?Otherwise it is a good vehicle with 215,000 miles. steve01832 Veteran Nov 23, 2006, 6:33 AM Post #2 of 3 (2041 views) Re: 1996 Chevy Lumina Van Sign In Have a shop put a high pressure guage on it to ensure the pump puts out correct pressure. If it is O.K. you more than likely need a new rack. GM vehicles are notorious for sticking valve bodies, especially when the engine is cold. Once it warms up the fluid thins out and the rack frees up. That's an indication that the valve bodies are sticking due to old age and internal buildup of sludge. Also, you can try pushing the bellows up the inner tie rod towards the rack, if any fluid is inside the bellows, the seal is blown and the rack is in need of replacement.
