1996 Chevy 2500 Noises From Front Driver Side (Grinding, Clicking, Thumping) Sign In

Hello there, I recently purchased a 1996 Chevy 2500 Cheyenne (2WD with 126k miles on it. When I purchased the vehicle there was a thumping noise that increased/decreased in speed with the speed of the truck coming front the driverside front wheel area, I thought maybe a problem with the tire. But since then I have noticed a couple more sounds coming from the front driver side as well.

I noticed when the car is turned all the way to the left and going slow (like when parking) there is a clicking/grinding noise.

When slowing down there is sometimes a grinding noise from the front driverside wheel area and I can feel it in the brake pedal.

I intend to take it into a shop as I am concerned this could be a safetly issue, but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of what this could be? Is it possible all these noises are related or does it sound like i have a few different problems with the front driverside wheel?

Thanks!

THIS IS DEFINATELY A SAFETY ISSUE SO DON'T WAIT.

First make sure lug nuts are tight. I suspect wheel bearing or perhaps a brake problem which should make itself apparent upon close inspection. The "clicking and grinding" is not generally consistant with a tire problem but look at that also,

I plan on taking it into a shop about a 1/4 mile away from my home tomorrow. I have not been in this area long though and I do not have any prior history or reccomendations for a mechanic, the choice of the shop I intend to take it to is based upon the closeness of them to my residence.

So you think that there would be more than one issue here? That the noise heard when driving is seperate from the noise heard when breaking, and possibly both of those are seperate from the noise heard when turning all the way to the left?

Thanks for your quick reply, ive been searching around on the forum and see that you are often the first reply! Keep up the great work It is much appreciated.

1/4 mile or not it's still worth checking that lug nuts are tight on that wheel. It's probably just one problem and I suspect wheel bearing the most right now but of course hard to say anything for sure. If that was bad enough it might have caused problems with the brake. Looking right at this will tell better than anything.

Seriously - do check the lug nuts. Left side lug nuts are more apt to loosen when not tightened enough by mistake and by the time symptoms are noted a loose wheel is close to falling off. Just rule that out. Don't know what wheels you have but it should be a 7/8th lug nut and possibly with a fake plastic cover over the real lug nut underneath that.

I don't know your tools available but the truck's jack has a lug wrench which should be behind seat of passenger's side. Ya - it's a PITA to get the set back in place neatly again just to use the lug wrench but there are diagrams to put that back together that will help.

This doesn't sound like a high tech problem so any shop should be able to assist and fix this for you,

T
