Year: 1996 Make: Audi Model: A4 Engine: 2.8 Automatic Mileage: 115K miles My car has been making a loud clicking sound when I start the car and change into drive or reverse (have not tested with changing into any other gear). I am not sure where the noise is coming from. I don't hear it much from inside the car, but when I roll down the window it is loud. It only does this after I have not driven the car for a day or more. It is usually in the AM so it is a little colder (I park my car outside). The clicking stops when I start driving. I don't hear the clicking again until I have left the car alone for a day or more. I only drive the car about every other day. I had the CV boot replaced along with both catalytic converters last year (among many other repairs). Thanks for any help! I really appreciate it. (edited out link)

If you've replaced the boots on CV joints they may have started to fail before that. They can click like a U-joint click as you described but more often would do repeated clicking when turning with some load. See if it's much worse when wheel is turned, T
