grinding noise Sign In

Hello there guys this is a 2002 civic comes with ABS, when there is snow on the ground and I depress the brake pedal there is a grinding noise, other than that it is fine, the rotors and pads are new, could the ABS cause this kind of grinding noise only when there is snow on the road, need your advice thank you.

Re: grinding noise Sign In

? Braking on snow w ABS: It's probably normal ABS action to avoid locking up a wheel as you said it only does this driving and braking on snow = slippery of course.

If warning lights are not lit and it's fine on regular road surface that's normal.

Now the "But" factor: If not familiar with driving in or on snow or ice try to find a place to get a feel for it out of harm's way. Brakes are your worst enemy if way too slippery and ABS isn't your friend either if totally slippery. There are so many types of snow and ice by the second it really takes YOU the driver to deal with it.

Some you can't even stand up on so forget the car dealing with it well - ABS goes nuts trying. There is never any more traction than the condition of tires and surface of the road no matter what features a vehicle has.
If you routinely feel ABS activating you are asking for to much braking force IMO and going to fast for the situation. This is unique to each specific area, type of snow and ice and if treated (salts of sorts) not evenly making road the same by the foot.

I think the feel you have is normal and if too often felt with nothing else wrong you are trying to brake too hard. Answer is slow down to a crawl if need be up to avoid it totally.

This link is really just made to be amusing nobody get hurt but shows how impossible ice/snow situations really can be!

That sounds like you are getting an ABS activation. That's exactly what the system was put there to do.
