G'day guys, Just took my Gf's car down to get some new tyres on and the guy down there said that the last person to replace the brake pads apparently stripped or threaded the caliper bolt back into the wrong spot or something. They said the bolt was pretty much just hanging out the back of the calipers. He then went on to explain that they have tightened it up as much as they could but it could come out at any time (be it 6 months or 6 years) He said to fix it he'd need to do a helix or helical something to re-thread it and maybe have to get a thread specialist in to check it out (minimum cost $150, and he put a pretty big emphasis on MINIMUM) I've never heard of anything like this and brakes seem like a pretty important thing to be on top of. Just wondering if anyone has heard of this happening and whether or not this could be an easier fix? Do the bolts screw into the calipers themselves? I swear new calipers would be cheaper than $150 from a wreckers? Or do the bolts screw into the drum or spindle or something? Sorry for my lack of knowledge. I'm no expert. haha Thanks in advance for any advice given James

Yes, bolts can be damaged when installed incorrectly and yes, a heli-coil is the method to correct the problem but NO, the price shouldn't be over $150 at all. I would say that a tire shop is not the best place to have that done. Find an independent shop with a good reputation. Stay away from the chain stores. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I would find a good general repair shop. The brake shop people are not generally highly experienced mechanics. They are the type of people that ruin these things in the first place and if this repair is not done right, they can ruin the whole knuckle. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

check with a professional parts supplier (NAPA) there are special bolts - oversized to address just this issue..... might not be the right application BUT illustrates the idea... http://www.dormanproducts.com/...748&SEName=13894
