Hi everyone,
I’ve got a 2010 Nissan Altima with 196000km on it. I just had it checked out because it was shaking when braking. The mechanic says that all of the brakes on it are at the end of their lifespan. Everything (including rotors and callipers) need to be changed. Strangely enough, I had the car serviced a few weeks ago by another mechanic and they did not mention anything about the brakes. They changed a tire so I assume they must have seen something if there was an issue?
Anyway, the estimate they now gave me seems a bit.. much. 2200$ (CAN) including parts and labor. I paid 1700$ for the car itself so it doesn’t seem to be much worth it.
Does anyone have any advice on what I should do? Should I get it checked out by another mechanic and if the repairs need to be made, how do I find the best prices?

I have no doubt that there is a problem with the rotors. What I am questioning is
1) whether all of the rotors/calipers actually need to be changed.
2) the price. I just got a quote from another local garage for the same parts and work and it's 1400$, an 800$ difference!
Since I am not very knowledgeable, I want to get more information on those 2 main points.

You are right there. The price is outrageous. Even at $1400 is too much. Excluding the calipers that it may not need, this should be under $800.
I would question if it actually needs calipers. That sounds suspect. The rotors, yes, I'm sure it needs those. It's cheaper to replace rotors these days rather than resurface them. The calipers are only changed when there is a problem and I doubt it needs all four if any.

OP - You can check prices yourself. Needing just rotors, calipers and pads maybe also brackets shouldn't be out of control. US based see and watch $CN vs $USD exchange is fairly close ~ 15%. Taxes may throw off parts costs a lot?
This is a popular car I don't expect wild costs for common parts like brakes are a routine seek out another quote for the work,
