Hot calipers locked up
|
|
|
Had a brake Job pads & rotors in March 2022. Brakes wouldn’t stop car so went back to shop today. Manager says calipers so hot he can’t even touch them. Brake lines destroyed. Needs new calipers & brake lines (500.00) pads & rotors (n/c) which are still under warranty. Did the march mechanic put my brakes together incorrectly? Thought brakes felt different after that brake job. 2010 Corolla

If the calipers were binding and instead of replacing them, he just forced the pistons back, they are going to keeps the brakes applied and overheat them. If that's the case he should have sold you calipers in the first place. He was probably trying to save you money and it didn't work. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

They never mentioned anything wrong with the calipers in the inspection and quote of the March brake job. I had a car accident because of this.

This was done in March? I thought is was real recent. That takes the shop completely off the hook. You can't blame them.

True. Off the hook with them that long but both at once is a clue not the accident but rather was in last couple years a flood car the reason the cars are junked as a total loss still get sold out there if that applies? Tom

The brake job was in March. The car accident was recently. What I want to know is how could the calipers not have been bad when they did the brake job in March? I have three other Toyotas in my driveway all with close to 200,000 miles and have never replace the calipers on any of them. This car was purchased new from a Toyota dealer and now has 100,000 miles. It was not a flood car or a previously damaged car.

OMG, DO YOU EVER SLEEP? Lots of cars, I get it, same here. The issue here is two at once is odd to me without some common denominator. Sunk under water is common to wreck two at the same time a few months later noticed or this was not called for IMO? Been at this crap for ages sport here bc I've seen almost anything cars or any broken thing had to fix it myself. Have a treat on me not thrilled with my state local or whole thing, MA BTW. Sidney Lumet says it all........ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRuS3dxKK9U Your cars need an experienced mechanic or if DIYing know what your doing or don't! Dude, your brake job was 9 months ago and it's even been in an accident since then. Stop looking for someone else to blame. Parts go bad. There are a lot of things that can cause parts to go bad but a mechanic that hasn't touched the car in 9 months is not one of them.

Same > No blame on this. Let's fix it? Already noted high use cars know and expect issues. IDK and never will it's web site not in person but think somehow a master cylinder is now in this mystery?? Sport - my whole body hurts from doing this stuff about not done. It's hard so please don't come close to blaming techs (yes some girls) so repecting that. Abuse to you by a tech is NOT common. Think? That wouldn't last for a day at a real shop - most are! Tom

Well, according to what I’ve read online bad rotors cause calipers to fail. Since the rotors and pads were replaced 9 months ago ……

The web is corrupted with b*ll sh*t - that's plain not true. You use this and cars a lot can expect 40,000 miles out of some brands of brake pads always toss rotors now are dirt cheap for these cars. At oil change time dammit, rotate tires look at brakes while wheels are off so if not even or worn you know it. I'm older that was standard treatment still do it now write thing downs underhood with a silver Sharpie, date/miles when what was done. Many vehicles (my own) still getting old for this crap. Newest plain car is 34 years old taking care of things works it was near new I just liked that one, Tom

You should be very thankful that this shop is willing to warranty the pads and rotors. They wouldn't be required to do that. Your shop is going above and beyond and you would be smart to appreciate that and stop trying to fault them.

Actually, it’s my insurance company that is faulting them. No one here could give me a reason for the calipers to go bad other than bad rotors so it sounds like the insurance company is correct. If anything, all your responses bereft of of mechanical information seem to indicate that the shop IS likely at fault here rather than not at fault. I guess I will step aside while the insurance company pursues it.
