Brakes making noises?? Sign In

I have a 2010 Hyundai Accent 2-door hatchback (sometimes referred to as 3-door hatchback). It has a 1.6L engine, 110 HP with 14,000 miles on it.
For over a year, we have been fighting a squeaking, squealing type of noise when the brakes are applied (usually when stopping). We have taken it to the dealer 3 times. At first, service said they could not duplicate the noise, although as soon as we left the dealership, it started again. We drove with it for quite awhile and then about 4 weeks ago, we took it back to the dealership. This time they said the right rear brake was out of adjustment and they did a "courtesy" adjustment. At that time, they said the front pads are 80% and rear pads are at 85% and the vehicle brakes were operating as intended. As we drove out of the dealership, the noise was gone. However, in a little over a week, the noise was back.
I called the dealership today to set up an appointment to see why the noise is back. At that time, the service writer said they might have to resurface all the drums/pads(??) and rotors. This astounded me since we have had the noise for so long and with our brakes having so little wear. I just can't believe our car which has been gently treated and in excellent condition and with so little mileage and brake wear would have to have this done. It is good thing they didn't charge us the last time since the noise came back within just a little over a week after they did a "courtesy" adjustment.
We bought the car because of the 5/10 year warranty and the expectation of a fairly cost free car (routine maintenance excepted) under the warranty.
Any thoughts on this would really be appreciated.

Brake noises are very common and will occur if all conditions are not perfect. The causes are numerous but usually have something to do with the type/quality of the pad and the condition of the contact surface. Anything from low quality brake pads, techniques omitted during installation or a glazed surface on the rotor can be the cause. If your car came to me with this problem, I would likely start all over with a complete brake job, done correctly although these noises are generally harmless to the braking ability of the car.

Thanks for your reply; however, since we bought the car new, and it only has 14,000 miles on brakes that have 80 to 85% left on the pads, it just doesn't seem reasonable that we should have to pay for all new brakes, etc. in our situation. If new brakes are the solution, would it be out of line to request the dealer we bought the car from to cover the cost? We do not speed so that we have to stop fast; we do not ride the brake and have never had this happen to any other car we have ever had.
Would appreciate your input.

Take that up with your dealer.

With warranties.....On anything....The item will only be fixed if it is "broken"

With cars there are 2 general types....Powertrain or bumper to bumper......

A powertrain warranty just covers the main powertrain items....Engine, transmission

A bumper to bumper warranty is just that, cover all the other items a powertrain warranty doesn't cover but want it doesn't cover are items that are going to wear out during normal driving....These are tires, brakes, fan belts, fluids, filters, etc........ These are only good for so long and then you have to replace them with new ones...

So with your brakes, while the noise is annoying, they aren't worn out....So under normal warranty conditions, being nosiy or even worn out isn't "broken". Now if your brake pad broken in half that wasn't due to driver abuse, then they would probably fix that...

Some places might "take care" of this problem out of pure customer satisfaction....If you've done a lot of business with this dealership,,,,would it really be worn it to lose a customer over a set of pad????? That's there call...

If it helps in the independent auto world....If you pads start to make noise under their warranty period, with its a year, 2 or more, they will fix that problem for no charge....
